Must admit, the LG 3D Optimus, LG has struck a blow by offering the first Android mobile to board a 3D display similar to what can be found on the Nintendo 3DS. For indeed, to enjoy this three-dimensional view, you will not even need to wear glasses adjusted. So naturally, when NRJ Mobile offered me to test this phone like no other, I jumped at the chance especially since I had not had the opportunity to test phone from plants the South Korean manufacturer.
The technical
As usual, we will start by looking at the technical specifications of the LG Optimus 3D. No big surprise, there is a TI OMAP4430 dual-core processor running at 1 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 8 GB of internal memory, a microSD slot, two 5-megapixel sensor with flash, autofocus and can capture photos or videos in three dimensions and a battery of 1540 mAh. After that, we of course entitled to WiFi, Bluetooth, aGPS with a chip and all the usual trimmings. Not to mention a microUSB port and an output miniHDMI. And that, children, it's good to good because all manufacturers do not necessarily equip their mobile output of this type. Big thought for Samsung by the way, for that matter.
No, where this phone out of the ordinary, it is at its screen. A 4.3-inch touch screen that offers resolution of 480 by 800 (or 480 by 400 in the 3D) and whose main feature you can view pictures and video in three dimensions. We return to this point a little further in the article but you can just say that it is rather ... ahem ... amazing.
However, and this is my opinion one of the villains of the mobile defects, you must know that it comes with Google Android 2.2. However, the good news is that Gingerbread would normally arrive on the Optimus 3D next month. Whew, we are saved!
Strengths: screen, sensors, connectivity options.
Weaknesses: battery version of Android.
Casually, the design of a high tech product is important. When you spend several hundred dollars in a mobile, it is not to feel shame when we are led to take it out of our pocket. On this point, it must be admitted, the LG 3D Optimus me much less delighted that the Samsung S Galaxy 2. While it is not ugly to look at it more friendly to the eye a HTC, but I think LG could have done a little effort on this side to stand out a little more competition.
Especially since the facade is quite interesting. Apart from the touch screen and four buttons placed just below, there is indeed a brushed aluminum texture type is rather quiet, it's true, but does not lack charm. Texture which in my view, should have been also used for the back of the unit. For the latter, the manufacturer has in fact opted for a matte plastic shell and adorned with its logo is a shame. Note however that there is also a vertical metal strip on which were grafted the two sensors of the device. The whole preceded by a statement that leaves no doubt on their usefulness, namely, "Stereoscopic 3D."
On the right spine are three buttons: the first two are used for volume control while the third provides access to 3D space integrated with Google Android. The left edge is missing no interest since found the USB (which also serves food) and output miniHDMI. These two ports are protected by a rigid plastic tab that allows them to shelter from dust. In addition, it should also be noted that the output miniHDMI and compatible 3D. If you have a TV of this type at home, so you can enjoy your content in three dimensions without any difficulty. Finally, on top of the LG Optimus 3D, we will find the headphone jack and the power button and standby. Small flat, it blends a little too into the hull of the device and it does not fall easily under the finger.
But the most interesting is the end under the hood. Once the back cover removed, it is possible to access the SIM card and microSD slot without removing the battery. If you are suddenly having to change cards, you will not need to power cycle the device.
Advantages: Texture on the front, tab on the ports, easy access to the SIM / microSD card.
Weaknesses: Texture on the back, button power that often tends to slip away.
Interface and Navigation
As mentioned just above, the LG 3D Optimus is the first LG mobile which have wandered my fingers. I do not know the manufacturer and the overlay is with some eagerness that I bent over. The record is mixed, she did not actually won more than that. However, his great strength is that it is fairly simple to understand and it offers a more ergonomic own. Here, the screen is devoted to applications of access to any test. We find the top 3D applications, while traditional applications and applications downloaded by the user appear a little lower.
The same goes for adding icons or widgets that no problem. The social network aggregator performs its function very well but it does not push the concept far enough since it only to aggregate data from only sorting services: Twitter, Facebook and MySpace .... Too bad, though it left a good feeling. However, if you do not use other social networks, you will probably find your account a little more than me. Same also for the integrated MP3 player that lacks a bit of pep. While it incorporates many features (EQ, sound effects, etc ...) but its interface was a bit left on my hunger.
However, the 3D Gallery I was much more excited. We'll talk a little lower but it provides easy access to all content available in three sizes and all applications that take advantage of this feature. Examples include the camera, the games but more importantly to YouTube 3D, a specific channel will delight you with a ton of vidos in three dimensions. Same, LG had the great idea to integrate their phone video player capable of decoding the main DivX or MKV.
Great, but internet browsing in all this?
Again, the results are very satisfactory. While the web pages are not displayed as fast as the Galaxy S 2 but the whole is still very fluid. We can also congratulate LG for the overhaul of the browser tabs. Even if it is limited to eight tabs, it is nevertheless very easy and pleasant to use.
Strengths: 3D Gallery, MKV playback, system browser tabs.
Weaknesses: "rigidity" of the overlay, limited social network aggregator.
3D innovation or gadget?
And finally it comes to the question that a lot of people must be asked as to whether the integration of a 3D display to a mobile is a real innovation or just a marketing tool more. Frankly, the answer to this thorny issue is really not simple because everything ultimately depends on your taste and your way of understanding the content in three dimensions. Some people love the 3D and can not do without it while others are resistant. If this is your case, then sure, do the 3D Optimus will certainly not change your mind. However, if you're more of a curious, then everything is different.
From my point of view, the biggest problem of the 3D Optimus is the need to be right in front of the screen to enjoy the 3D display at fair value. If you tilt your head a little too left or too right, then the result will be very unpleasant, as if the images superimposed slobbering on each other. In the same way and as I wrote a little higher, when 3D is enabled on the mobile, the screen resolution of up to 480 falls sharply by 400 which is still stretched on the 480 by 800 . Of course, if you watch a video in high resolution, the result is perfectly acceptable but it is not the case if you fold on lower resolutions.
Same thing, if the module "3D space" is really well thought out transition effects between the contents leave much to be desired. Almost as if LG had tried to do too much. Shame, shame.
Strengths: immersion in games, in movies.
Weaknesses: no 3D on the side, reduced resolution, transition effects.
And then, well or well?
Here, one might think that the LG 3D Optimus is not that good and its 3D display is poor. Of course, this phone is not without its flaws, sure, but it is nevertheless a very good product. Its processor can comfortably enjoy all the applications of the Market and the guy does not lack charm, either. Of course, its design is a bit too conventional, but we can still point out that is much better in hand than the Samsung S Galaxy 2. This is not surprising since the LG mobile is a bit heavier and thicker than the latter. Moreover, it is not necessarily a bad thing, eh.
Obviously remains the question of 3D. Must admit, on some titles like NOVA, it is easily taken the game to be honest, I felt exactly the same feeling playing with the Nintendo 3DS, and it's still remarkable. Same, as we talked about in a previous article, LG is currently working on a tool to fit many sets of the Market on the screen of his Optimus 3D. Even that will soon be able to play Angry Birds in three dimensions. In other words, if this tool will be made public when publishers can use them to their own creations, while the LG phone will enjoy a very consistent and 3D game library that is sure to delight probably not all those who are sometimes their motive to kill the time between two trains or planes.
In short, in the end, the LG Optimus 3D is a nice surprise. Now, what I hope is that LG will fix all the little things that leave something to be desired for the second version of its mobile.
